Synthetic fuel, energy for the combustion engine
According to Volkmar Denner, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Robert Bosch GmbH: “Synthetic fuels can make gasoline and diesel vehicles carbon neutral, and therefore contribute significantly to limiting global warming.”
According to the company’s study, by 2050 the use of this fuel could save up to 2.8 gigatonnes of CO2, or about three times the emissions of carbon dioxide produced by Germany last year.
For the manufacture of these fuels, the hydrogen particles are extracted from the water and combined with the CO2 recycled from other industrial processes and from the carbon dioxide particles that have captured the air filters. This process is carried out in special plants where the electricity generated by renewable energy is used.
The result is a completely synthetic fuel that runs both diesel and petrol engines without the need to modify its internal components. Another advantage would be to be able to be supplied at any service station, avoiding having to install a new network.
Although at present the manufacture of these fuels is complex and expensive, over time, and increasing its production would cost around 1 or 1.40 euros per liter, according to Bosch studies.
Although CO2 emissions from cars will remain the same, in the manufacture of this synthetic fuel, the same number of particles will be removed from the atmosphere.
